Wilbur

I have been meaning to review this magical place for a while now, and the time is now! As I await an appropriate time to take my lunch break, I figured I’d torture myself by talking about one of God’s greatest gifts to the world: Mexican food. For someone who can’t handle spicy foods, Mexican is one of my favourite indulgences…seriously. When someone says “OMG it isn’t spicy at ALL”, I still can’t trust them.

Enough about my pathetic taste buds…back to the man (restaurant) of the hour. Wilbur Mexicana opened this fall on King between Spadina and Bathurst, and it is unreal. While it’s a bit out of my way, one of my good friends works there and highly recommended it. Being the supportive and hungry friend that I am, I finally met her for dinner after her shift a few weeks ago. Hoooooly smokes, people. I loved it.

Described to me as “an upscale Chipotle”, Wilbur delivers the convenience of take-out alongside the perk of dining in. Whether you’re a suit grabbing a quick lunch or- like me- a sodium fiend looking to eat her weight in chips, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Wilbur.

You place your order at the counter- in my case, taquitos, a burrito, and obviously a cerveza- and wait at a table to be served. Each dish is served with a healthy portion of SUPER salty chips (my kryptonite), and a salsa bar offers multiple options (and caters to spice-intolerant folks like myself). Also there is a SWEET fountain soda machine that I kind of wish I got to use…cool gadgets get me every time.

The guac is fantastic, the “Wilbur-rito” was big enough to feed a small army, and the atmosphere is equal parts relaxed and hip. Much like El Furniture Warehouse, I didn’t quite feel trendy enough to be there…the wait staff made me want to rethink all hair and clothing choices I’ve ever made. Although a few did compliment my lightbulb tattoo, so I guess I earned some cool points there. I was too busy stuffing my face to take any pics (#bloggerregrets), but be sure to follow me on Instagram for an update next time I pay them a visit!

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Wilbur. If you’re looking for reasonably priced Mexican food with a super chill vibe and SUPER hot waitresses (hi, B) then look no further. As soon as the temperatures pop to above freezing, I will definitely be trekking back there to get my fill of Mexican goodness.
