Over the past 6 months or so, my mission has been to zero in on my personal style. Throughout university I tried many a trend; some that turned out okay—short hair (beat the rush with that one) and knee socks—and some were less than flattering—crop tops do not suit my non-existant torso. It’s time to come to terms with the fact that I am just not a trendy person. I’m too poor and/or late to the game to keep up with the fashion world. My best friend and I had a conversation about this a while ago, and it has stuck with me whenever I go shopping: why dress for trends, when we much prefer classic looks. She was so right; while something like the grunge look may suit some girls, it just isn’t for me. This isn’t to say that I will never again try a trend (I will rock Doc Martens this year), but I’ve come to realize that I am so much more comfortable dressing simply. I guess that means I’ll never have a cool and edgy Instagram, but it’s a sacrifice I’ll have to make.
That said, “zeroing in” on my personal style means making some tough choices with my closet. That floral bodycon skirt may have looked killer in university, but now I can’t remember the last time I wore it (in retrospect, that’s a lie…I wore it on vacation last year…but you get my point)! I’ve compiled a list of items I have—or think I should have—that are key pieces in my closet, which I can then supplement with the odd fun/trendy item. I love buying new clothes, but I need to be real with myself…even though cozy sweaters top my list of things to have, I reaaaally don’t need to buy anymore. By having staples already built into my wardrobe, hopefully I will spend money on things I actually need. Doesn’t being an adult suck?
