Bits & Bobs: Desk Edition

There are few stranger moments than when you realize you spend more time at your desk than you do at home. I only work 40 hours per week, nothing too crazy; still, I maintain that 8-5, Monday-Friday is a pretty substantial chunk of time spent in one chair staring at the same décor. While the majority of cubicles are drab (ours are a LOVELY grey fabric), it isn’t terribly difficult to make it your own. I work a contract job and am wiggling my way into a permanent position…one of my more subtle employment tactics is to slooooowly make my desk a reflection of me. It started with some snacks, and has evolved into my home base during the week. Over the past 10 months I’ve figured out what supplies I can snag from the office (the good pens or the ever-elusive clippy pins [I do believe that is the technical term]) and what I need to bring from home to make my week more enjoyable.

Below is a REAL LIFE, UNTOUCHED photo of my desk. It ain’t so glamorous, but this little corner of heaven makes my sometimes agonizingly slow days a bit brighter (mostly in the winter…btw is that over yet)? Read on for a list of things I’ve accumulated to get me through my work day.

1. Personal Photos
Because I don’t see enough of my boyfriend, best friend or sister (ok, that one is true), I need to stare at their faces all day.

2. Knickknacks
Baby Groot bobblehead for hours of entertainment? Check. Beautiful calendar/easel from Chapters? Check. This little corner simultaneously reminds me how generous my boyfriend is, and how much something small and trivial can make me happy.

3. Pen Cup
Stole this gem from my friend Bronwyn in university…I think she’s given up on it. Score! For months I had pens scattered about my desk like a SAVAGE. Now, I store them in this pretty lil thing.

4. Kleenex
WHO, MIGHT I ASK, is the monster who created no-name-brand tissues? Those things are the leading cause of any and all nose afflictions. I swear, I read it online. In all seriousness, these lotion-infused Kleenex were a Godsend during this hellish winter we’ve had.

5. Headphones
I sit in the noisiest corner of the office, and I often need some tunes to drown it out. Jimmy Fallon videos are another big ol’ time waster for me…Ok FINE, sometimes I pretend to be listening to music just to avoid conversation…come on, don’t act like I’m the only one who has those days.

6. Sippy Cup
Because I am a toddler and a regular glass just doesn’t cut it.

7. SNACKS.
Did you HONESTLY think I wouldn’t have a grocery store at my desk? I need snacks (and tea. always tea.) readily available…regular faves include yogurt covered raisins, pretzel crisps, and peanut butter. I put that shit on everything.

8. Booty Products
This is more of an “in my purse” must-have, but my purse is with me at work…that counts, right? I am notorious for making plans after work and overbooking myself, which means I need to be able to freshen up at the drop of a hat. Perfume, mascara, concealer, deodorant, lipstick, and a hair brush are all readily available in my bag o’ tricks. At the very least, there are a variety of lip products and hand creams strewn about my desk. YAY MOISTURE (gross).
