15 Things I Learned From My Mom

As I’m sure you know, this Sunday is Mother’s Day (and if you didn’t know, now is the time to zip out to grab a card!). I’m all for a day just for moms: is there anything they can’t do?

My mom is my confidante, my therapist, and my own personal WebMD. Since I moved away to university, we’ve only gotten closer (funny how that happens). I call home pretty much every day just so we can chat…#needy. I know plenty of people think their mom is the coolest, but I’m definitely nominating Janet for the award. She’s one hell of a lady, and I’m so lucky to call her my Momma.

My friend Jess inspired this post…I read her list this morning, and it made me think of all the lessons that I’ve learned from my mom- big and small (you should probably read Jess’ list after this, it’s so incredibly sweet). There are a million things that my mom has taught me…these are the ones that come immediately to mind. I hope this makes you think about the cool things you’ve learned from your mom, and gives you even more reason to hug her this weekend. Happy Mother’s Day!

1. Dogs truly are a girl’s best friend.

2. Who needs a professional- you can probably MacGyver the shit out of most things with a tool kit and some creativity.

3. You can never wear too much black.

4. …or chambray.

5. Keep a fully stocked toiletry cabinet at all times. It may appear insane, but you’ll thank yourself on the day you run out of deodorant.

6. There’s always room for dessert.

7. Always bring snacks in your carry-on. Your kids will mock you, but they’ll also be asking you to pass the pretzels 10 minutes into the flight.

8. Shit happens. There’s no use worrying over things you can’t control.

9. There is no shame in going to bed before 9pm.

10. If your kid is in the hospital, it’s ok to smuggle McDonald’s in for them.

11. Send care packages for every occasion: Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Easter, or even a first break-up.

12. Girls can be strong, and upper body strength is most definitely a genetic trait (seriously, thanks mom.)

13. Love your kids friends like they are your own…even if you’ve never met them.

14. Wait until your 40s to get tattoos, and you can get as many as you want. (Sorry for not listening…)

15. Always look on the bright side, tomorrow is a new day.
